Infrastructure Proposal

How the Infrastructure proposal affects the Trucking Industry.

With TMS Digital being a Transportation Management System provider, which includes our trucking software like Tickets for heavy duty trucks and dump trucks, our sophisticated work horse, Dispatch, for over the road trucking, as well as our IFTA Manager program, it is really important for us to stay on top of trucking news.  This helps us see the direction transportation is going in and allows us to continually make improvements to our software to accommodate the changing world of transportation.

I will be quoting several of the trucking news leaders in regards to how President Joe Biden’s Infrastructure plan will affect our current and future clients.  Let us hope that our elected officials will put politics aside and work across the aisle to find a happy medium and get this thing passed.

Quote from Freighwaves

If Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure program is enacted, it “could put the United States back on a pre-recession job growth path and create and/or save 15 million jobs,” according to the report. It estimated that infrastructure jobs averaged 12% of all jobs in the U.S. economy prior to the pandemic. Midpandemic, the number of infrastructure jobs in 2020 averaged 11% of all jobs, “reflective of the general malaise in employment across the labor force.” The report estimates that under Biden’s plan, infrastructure-related jobs would increase temporarily to 14% of the total job market. “Senate Democratic leaders have yet to announce when they intend to consider Biden’s proposals for investing $115 billion for highways, roads and bridges, $85 billion for transit, $80 billion for Amtrak, $25 billion for airports and $17 billion for inland ports”.  Read more…

“Biden envisions the plan fully paid for within 15 years – but only if he is able to pass an adjoining plan to increase corporate taxes from the current 21% passed under the Trump administration in 2018 to 28%.”

“The American Jobs Plan is an investment in America that will create millions of good jobs, rebuild our country’s infrastructure and position the United States to outcompete China,” the plan states. “Public domestic investment as a share of the economy has fallen by more than 40% since the 1960s. The American Jobs Plan will invest in America in a way we have not invested since we built the interstate highways and won the space race.”  Read more …

Quote from Trucker’s News

“TCA acknowledges the dedication of President Biden and his administration to improve our nation’s deteriorating infrastructure; however, we remain vitally concerned that the proposed plan does not address creating a fully sustainable funding mechanism to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent and other components which are sure to be challenged by Congress.

“Additionally, the inclusion of any language that jeopardizes the independent contractor business model, which has proven itself in our industry as a pathway to the American dream, is unnecessary in a plan that should be devoted to the development of a world-class network of interstates dedicated to serving the American public.  Read more …

Compared to China, quote from Transport Topics

What President Joe Biden touted as a historic U.S. federal investment program that will position the country to win the global innovation race still leaves it well behind China’s continuing, giant infrastructure upgrading campaign.

While the top-line for Biden’s American Jobs Plan is $2.25 trillion, China’s government and private companies pour the equivalent of trillions of dollars each year into new infrastructure ranging from transport to communications networks, water projects to manufacturing. Read More …
